More than 15,000 years ago drawings were found in Spanish caves depicting humans with animal skins and furs wrapped around their feet[1]. When the body of a 5300 year old “ice-man” was found wearing leather foot coverings stuffed with straw in the Oztal Alps in 1991[2], we realized that shoes of some form have been around for a very long time.
The oldest and still worn style of shoe is the sandal[1]; although it has been modernized from the Egyptian, Greek and Roman versions and made in flat and heeled versions it remains a popular choice for men and women alike. Many of the shoes we wear today can be tracked back to another era. In the past shoes with high soles were to keep feet off the dirty streets, today they are worn strictly for fashion’s sake.[1]
Keds were the first rubber soled “sneaker” to be mass marketed in 1917; they were also the first sneaker. They were called sneakers because the rubber soles allowed the wearer to sneak up people because they didn’t make any noise.[3], Keds are still made and sold today, it remains one of the most popular brands of shoes.
